Organization of Football in Brazil

The organization of football in Brazil is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or face relegations based on their performances. This structure is divided into several levels, ranging from professionalism to semi-professionalism, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Série A, which is the highest level of Brazilian football. It brings together 20 professional clubs that vie for the title of Brazilian champion. The bottom four teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Série B, which also comprises 20 clubs. The top four teams from this division are promoted to Série A, while the bottom four descend to the Série C.

The Série C, the third tier, hosts 20 teams, mostly semi-professional. The top four teams are promoted to Série B, and the bottom four are relegated to the Série D. This level is subdivided into eight groups of 17 clubs each, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with Série C and the Série E.

The Série E, the fifth level of Brazilian football, is organized into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond Série E, the system continues with regional and departmental divisions, underscoring the depth and richness of Brazilian football at all levels of competition.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF)

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) is the official body that oversees football in Brazil. Established in 1914, it is tasked with the organization and development of football at all levels, from amateur football to professional competitions. The CBF also manages the national teams, including the men's, women's, and youth teams. It is responsible for enforcing the rules of the game, promoting sportsmanship, and overseeing ethics in the sport.

Under the auspices of the CBF is the Série A of the Brazilian Football Championship, which is the country's main professional football competition. The CBF also organizes the Brazil Cup, a competition open to all Brazilian clubs, from amateur to professional. In addition to competitions, the CBF is committed to developing women's football, sports infrastructures, and training programs for players and coaches.
