The organization of football in Colombia is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend in level based on their performance. This system is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional football to amateur football.
At the top of the hierarchy is the Categoría Primera A, also known as Liga BetPlay DIMAYOR. This is the highest level of Colombian football and it comprises 20 professional clubs vying for the title of Colombian champion. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Categoría Primera B, which also includes 16 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to Categoría Primera A, while the bottom two descend to the Copa Colombia.
The Copa Colombia, the third tier, is a knockout competition that includes teams from the Categoría Primera A and Categoría Primera B. The winner of the Copa Colombia qualifies for the Copa Libertadores, the most prestigious club competition in South America.
Below these three tiers, there are a series of regional and departmental leagues that constitute the lower levels of Colombian football. These leagues provide amateur clubs with the opportunity to progress through the league system and potentially reach the professional levels of Colombian football.
The Colombian Football Federation (FCF) is the official entity overseeing football in Colombia. Established in 1924, it is responsible for organizing and promoting football at all levels, from amateur football to professional competitions. The FCF also manages the national teams, including the men's, women's, and youth teams. Its role encompasses managing the rules of the game, promoting sportsmanship, and overseeing ethics in the sport.
Under the auspices of the FCF is the Major Division of Colombian Football (DIMAYOR), which manages the men's professional leagues, the Categoría Primera A and Categoría Primera B, as well as the Copa Colombia. The FCF also organizes the Colombian Cup, a competition open to all Colombian clubs, from amateur to professional. In addition to competitions, the FCF is committed to developing women's football, sports infrastructure, and training programs for players and coaches.
