Organization of Football in El Salvador

The organization of football in El Salvador is structured into several levels, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This structure is divided into various tiers, ranging from professional football to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Primera División, which is the highest level of Salvadoran football. It comprises 12 professional clubs that compete for the title of champion of El Salvador. The bottom two clubs in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Segunda División, which also includes 24 clubs. The top two teams from the Segunda División are promoted to the Primera División, while the bottom three are relegated to the Tercera División.

The Tercera División, the third level of Salvadoran football, hosts 50 clubs, primarily semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to the Segunda División, and the bottom four are relegated to the Cuarta División. This level is subdivided into several groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the Tercera División.

The Cuarta División, the fourth level of Salvadoran football, is organized into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams of professional clubs. Beyond the Cuarta División, the system continues with regional and departmental divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Salvadoran football at all levels of competition.

The Salvadoran Football Association (FESFUT)

The Salvadoran Football Association (FESFUT) is the official body overseeing football in El Salvador. Established in 1935, it is responsible for organizing and developing football at all levels, from amateur football to professional competitions. FESFUT also supervises national teams, including the men's, women's, and youth teams. Its role extends to managing the rules of the game, promoting sportsmanship, and overseeing ethics in the sport.

Under the auspices of FESFUT is the Professional Football League of El Salvador, which manages the men's and women's professional leagues. FESFUT also organizes the Salvadoran Cup, a competition open to all Salvadoran clubs, from amateur to professional. Beyond competitions, FESFUT places a strong emphasis on developing women's football, sports infrastructure, and training programs for players and coaches.
