Organization of Football in Israel

The organization of football in Israel is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This system is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional football to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Israeli Premier League, which is the highest level of Israeli football. It consists of 14 clubs vying for the title of Israeli champion. The bottom two clubs in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Liga Leumit, which also comprises 16 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the Israeli Premier League, while the bottom two descend into the Liga Alef.

The Liga Alef, the third tier, is divided into two regional divisions (north and south) and includes a total of 32 teams. The champions of each division are promoted to Liga Leumit, while the bottom three from each division descend into the Liga Bet.

The Liga Bet, the fourth tier of Israeli football, is organized into four regional divisions. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond Liga Bet, the system continues with regional and local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Israeli football at all levels of competition.

The Israel Football Association (IFA)

The Israel Football Association (IFA) is the official body overseeing football in Israel. Established in 1928, it is responsible for the organization and development of football at all levels, from amateur football to professional competitions. The IFA also manages the national teams, including the men's, women's, and youth teams. Its role includes managing the rules of the game, promoting sportsmanship, and overseeing ethics in the sport.

Under the auspices of the IFA is the Israel Professional Football League, which manages the men's professional leagues, the Premier League and the Liga Leumit, as well as the State Cup. The IFA also organizes the Toto Cup, a competition open to all Israeli clubs, from amateur to professional. In addition to competitions, the IFA places a strong emphasis on developing women's football, sports infrastructure, and training programs for players and coaches.
