Organization of Football in Nigeria

The organization of football in Nigeria is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to semi-professional, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), which is the highest level of Nigerian football. It comprises 20 professional clubs vying for the title of Nigeria's champion. The bottom four teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Nigeria National League (NNL), which also includes 20 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the NPFL, while the bottom four descend to the Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO).

The Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO), the third tier, hosts a large number of teams, predominantly semi-professional. The best teams are promoted to the NNL, and the least performing ones are relegated to the Nigeria Nationwide League Two (NLO2). This tier is subdivided into several groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with the NLO and the Nigeria Nationwide League Three (NLO3).

The Nigeria Nationwide League Three (NLO3), the fifth tier of Nigerian football, is organized into several groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams of professional outfits. Beyond the NLO3, the system continues with regional and local divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Nigerian football at all levels of competition.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is the official body overseeing football in Nigeria. Established in 1945, it is responsible for organizing and developing football at all levels, from amateur football to professional competitions. The NFF also manages the national teams, including the men's, women's, and youth teams. Its role encompasses managing the rules of the game, promoting sportsmanship, and overseeing ethics in the sport.

Under the auspices of the NFF is the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), which manages the men's professional leagues. The NFF also organizes the Nigeria Cup, a competition open to all Nigerian clubs, from amateur to professional. In addition to competitions, the NFF places a strong emphasis on developing women's football, sports infrastructure, and training programs for players and coaches.
