Organization of Football in Senegal

The organization of football in Senegal is based on a hierarchical league system, which allows clubs to ascend or face relegations based on their performances. This structure is divided into several levels, ranging from professional to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Ligue 1, which is the highest level of Senegalese football. It comprises 14 professional clubs that compete for the title of Senegal's champion. The bottom three teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Ligue 2, which also includes 14 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to Ligue 1, while the bottom three descend to the National 1.

The National 1, the third level, hosts 21 teams, predominantly semi-professional. The top two teams are promoted to Ligue 2, and the bottom four are relegated to the National 2. This level is subdivided into several groups, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with National 1 and the National 3.

The National 3, the fifth level of Senegalese football, is organized into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond National 3, the system continues with regional and departmental divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Senegalese football at all levels of competition.

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF)

The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) is the official body overseeing football in Senegal. Established in 1960, it is responsible for organizing and developing football at all levels, from amateur football to professional competitions. The FSF also manages the national teams, including the Senegal men's team, the women's team, and youth teams. Its role includes managing the rules of the game, promoting sportsmanship, and overseeing ethics in the sport.

Under the auspices of the FSF is the Senegalese Professional Football League (LSFP), which manages the men's and women's professional leagues. The FSF also organizes the Senegal Cup, a competition open to all Senegalese clubs, from amateur to professional. In addition to competitions, the FSF places a strong emphasis on developing women's football, sports infrastructure, and training programs for players and coaches.
