Organization of Football in Switzerland

The organization of football in Switzerland is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or face relegations based on their performances. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Swiss Super League, which is the highest level of Swiss football. It comprises 10 professional clubs vying for the title of Swiss champions. The bottom two teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Swiss Challenge League, which also includes 10 clubs. The top two teams from this division are promoted to the Super League, while the last-placed team descends to the Swiss Promotion League.

The Swiss Promotion League, the third tier, hosts 16 teams. The champion of this league is promoted to the Challenge League, while the bottom three are relegated to the 1. Liga Classic. This tier is subdivided into three groups of 14 clubs each, operating on the same promotion and relegation principle with the Promotion League and the 2. Liga Interregional.

The 2. Liga Interregional, the fifth tier of Swiss football, is organized into 5 groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond the 2. Liga Interregional, the system continues with regional and cantonal divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Swiss football at all levels of competition.

Tiers 6 to 15 of Swiss football are organized by regional and cantonal associations. These tiers include the 2. Liga, the 3. Liga, the 4. Liga, the 5. Liga and so on up to the 11. Liga. These leagues are primarily composed of amateur clubs and youth clubs.

The Swiss Football Association (SFA)

The Swiss Football Association (SFA) is the official body overseeing football in Switzerland. Established in 1895, it is responsible for organizing and developing football at all levels, from amateur football to professional competitions. The SFA also manages the national teams, including the men's, women's, and youth teams. Its role encompasses managing the rules of the game, promoting sportsmanship, and overseeing ethics in the sport.

Under the auspices of the SFA is the Super League, which is the professional men's football league in Switzerland. The SFA also organizes the Swiss Cup, a competition open to all Swiss clubs, from amateur to professional. In addition to competitions, the SFA places a strong emphasis on developing women's football, sports infrastructures, and training programs for players and coaches.
