Organization of Football in Thailand

The organization of football in Thailand is based on a hierarchical league system, which allows clubs to ascend or descend in level based on their performance. This system is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to semi-professional, down to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Thai League 1, which is the highest level of Thai football. It comprises 16 professional clubs that compete for the title of Thailand champion. The bottom three teams in the standings at the end of the season are relegated to the Thai League 2, which also includes 16 clubs. The top three teams from this division are promoted to Thai League 1, while the bottom three descend to the Thai League 3.

The Thai League 3, the third tier, is divided into two groups of 12 teams each, primarily semi-professional. The top two teams from each group are promoted to Thai League 2, and the bottom two from each group are relegated to the Thai League 4. This tier is subdivided into five regional groups of 10 to 12 clubs each, operating on the same principle of promotion and relegation with Thai League 3 and the Thai League 5.

The Thai League 5, the fifth tier of Thai football, is organized into several regional groups. It includes amateur clubs as well as reserve teams from professional outfits. Beyond Thai League 5, the system continues with regional and provincial divisions, highlighting the depth and richness of Thai football at all levels of competition.

The Football Association of Thailand (FAT)

The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) is the official body overseeing football in Thailand. Established in 1916, it is responsible for organizing and developing football at all levels, from amateur football to professional competitions. The FAT also manages the national teams, including the men's, women's, and youth teams. Its role includes managing the rules of the game, promoting sportsmanship, and overseeing ethics in the sport.

Under the auspices of the FAT is the Thai Football League, which manages the men's and women's professional leagues. The FAT also organizes the Thai Cup, a competition open to all Thai clubs, from amateur to professional. In addition to competitions, the FAT places a strong emphasis on developing women's football, sports infrastructure, and training programs for players and coaches.
