Organization of Football in Uruguay

The organization of football in Uruguay is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to ascend or descend in level based on their performance. This system is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional football to amateur football.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Primera División, which is the highest level of Uruguayan football. It comprises 16 professional clubs vying for the title of Uruguay's champion. The teams that rank lowest at the end of the season are relegated to the Segunda División, which also includes 16 clubs. The top-performing teams in this division are promoted to the Primera División.

The third tier of Uruguayan football is the Segunda División Amateur, which hosts semi-professional and amateur teams. The best teams at this level can be promoted to the Segunda División.

Below these three national tiers, Uruguayan football is organized into regional leagues, which constitute the lower levels of the system. These regional leagues are numerous and varied, reflecting the richness and diversity of Uruguayan football at all levels of competition.

The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF)

The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) is the official body that oversees football in Uruguay. Established in 1900, it is tasked with the organization and development of football at all levels, from amateur competitions to professional leagues. The AUF is also in charge of the national teams, including the men's, women's, and youth teams. Its role encompasses managing the rules of the game, promoting sportsmanship, and overseeing ethics in the sport.

Under the auspices of the AUF is the Primera División, Uruguay's professional football league. The AUF also organizes the Copa Uruguay, a competition open to all Uruguayan clubs, from amateur to professional. In addition to competitions, the AUF is committed to developing women's football, sports infrastructure, and training programs for players and coaches.
