Organization of Soccer in the United States

The organization of soccer in the United States is based on a hierarchical league system, allowing clubs to move up or down based on their performance. This structure is divided into several tiers, ranging from professional to semi-professional, down to amateur soccer.

At the top of the hierarchy is the Major League Soccer (MLS), which is the highest level of American soccer. It comprises 27 professional clubs vying for the title of United States champion. Unlike many other football league systems, there is no relegation to the USL Championship, the second tier of American soccer.

The USL Championship includes 31 teams, primarily professional. As with the MLS, there is no relegation/promotion system with the lower tier, the USL League One.

The USL League One is the third tier of American soccer and includes 12 teams. Again, there is no relegation/promotion system with the lower tier, the National Independent Soccer Association (NISA).

The NISA is the fourth tier of American soccer and includes 10 teams. Beyond the NISA, the system continues with regional and local leagues, highlighting the depth and richness of American soccer at all levels of competition.

The United States Soccer Federation (USSF)

The United States Soccer Federation (USSF) is the official governing body for soccer in the United States. Established in 1913, it is responsible for the organization and development of soccer at all levels, from amateur play to professional competitions. The USSF also oversees national teams, including the men's, women's, and youth teams. Its role extends to managing the rules of the game, promoting sportsmanship, and enforcing ethics in the sport.

Under the auspices of the USSF is the Major League Soccer (MLS), which manages the men's professional league. The USSF also organizes the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, a competition open to all American clubs, from amateur to professional. Beyond competitions, the USSF places a strong emphasis on developing women's soccer, sports infrastructure, and training programs for players and coaches.
